What is Yin yoga?

Yin yoga is a slow stilling practice that cultivates a deep sense of awareness through the release of mind and body stresses. It's origins are founded in the Chinese Taoist system of opening up meridians, the energy channels within our bodies, to increase the flow and circulation of Chi to improve our health and well-being.

Yin focuses on releasing the connective tissue of the body (tendons, ligaments and fascia). Poses are held for around 3 - 5 minutes each, with time in-between to release and rest. Learning to connect fully to the body & mind experience takes time and practice, it maybe take several sessions before you really come to appreciate the full benefits of allowing your body to soften and yield to this deep practice.

Preparing for your Yin Yoga Class

You will be practicing in the comfort of your own home and you may need to prepare a little differently from a regular yoga class.

Make sure your space is calm, warm, quiet and relaxing, maybe light your favourite scented candle, dim the lighting and have your props available.

Avoid eating a large meal before the class, and make sure you are hydrated.

In Yin yoga we support our held poses often with props such as blocks, bricks, straps, bolsters and blankets. Don't worry if you haven't got all of these at home we can make use of things we do have around the house. Thick books can be used instead of blocks and bricks. Have plenty of cushions and blankets or towels, these can be rolled or folded to create a bolster or work the same way as blocks. A strap is easily replaced with a scarf or belt. You will soon become inventive and familiar with what you need.

Yin yoga is a wonderful compliment to a regular (Yang) yoga class.
